TOPIC 5: MEMORY, IMPROVING CONCENTRATION & READING SYSTEM

This topic is focused on using our memory to the fullest and improving our concentration. This is because it aims to enable students to understand the basic process of memory, and apply the memory skills in their learning.

You can check on your memory skill by doing some exercise such as: 



Student need to understand how information is learned and to understand the needs of using various kind of active learning strategies in learning, retaining and using the information (encoding, storage and retrieval) and hence , indicates how one learns, remembers and forget.

The Storage (Retain Information)

Sensory Memory : Numerous incoming information from 5 senses will be stored in the sensory memory.
Short-Term Memory : Limited storage.
Long-Term Memory : Can store a lot more information for a longer amount of time.

• Repetition
• Visualization
• Categorization
• Talk it Out
• Cues
• Set Location
• Routines

Why do we tend to forget?

• Did not pay attention to the information
• Cramming (Last minute study)
• Interference (Two exam on the same day)
• Did not understand the information 
• Did not have good strategies
• Test anxiety (Negative thoughts)

Strategies on improving concentration

Concentration: Focusing your attention on what you are doing.

• Use active learning strategies(as discussed in improving memory)
• Use motivational and organizational strategies – create interest in work
• Match your learning style to the task
• Create a positive learning environment – find a better location
• Monitor your concentration
• Deal with internal distractions – deal with personal problems
